Description

I suspect that the name Maude Gage Pellerin is a familiar one to many of you. She co-authored a book with Bertha Weston Price – ‘The Trial of the Broad Highway’ in 1929.  She wrote a history of East Hatley entitled, ‘The Story of Hatley’, first published in 1949 and then republished twice since then by the Stanstead County Women’s Institute.  She also published a book of poetry – ‘The Songs of Old Quebec’ in 1949.  She wrote for both the Stanstead Journal and The Sherbrooke Record for several years.  I am her granddaughter.

She died in 1958 and left a finished, but unpublished manuscript entitled, “The Stories that Grandfather Told”.  This is a collection of what is commonly known as the oral tradition of that area in Stanstead County.  It was intended for young people so that they might know something of the challenges and hardships of the first settlers of this part of the Eastern Townships. These “true tales” describe life in the early days. Woven into the stories is a rich history of what these settlers experienced and endured.  It has waited a long time to meet its audience.  It was published in the spring of 2021, nearly 63 years after her death and more than 70 years after it was written.
