Description

Threads of Our History‒Living Memories of the Good Old Times in the Coaticook Area is a set of three DVDs featuring stories from about thirty seniors from the mainly English-speaking communities in the Valley.

Spearheaded by Coaticook’s cultural consultation table (le Table de concertation culturelle de la MRC de Coaticook), the DVD set was recently launched in Waterville.

“It features many stories of rural life from their memories in in the  past century,” said the organization’s president, Michèle Lavoie. “As many of these people are getting on in years, they are able to offer unique accounts of the time of the region’s settlement. The purpose of the project was to record their memories as quickly as possible to preserve this living heritage for dissemination to the public, and to offer it to future generations.” The seniors were filmed in local heritage buildings by Stéphane Lafrance, of Productions MiliMik. The musical score was recorded at Ives Hill’s hall in Compton, during an evening of dance hosted by The Country Swingers, a band formed by Ron Haseltine, Dave Bessant, Art Little, and Carol Sayers. “The DVDs are an extraordinary source of stories likely to bring back memories among the older crowd, and to surprise the younger generation a bit,” said the former Mayor of Waterville and project coordinator, Gladys Bruun. “As one participant put it, it took her courage to go to the bathroom in the unheated ‘backhouse’ in the middle of winter.”
